Flat Iron London Review: Affordable Steak and Free Ice Cream

When I wrote recently about affordable places to eat in London, I almost included Flat Iron in the list.

Then I realized it probably deserved its own post.

The reason is simple: Flat Iron is inexpensive by London steakhouse standards, but it is not quite the ultra-cheap bargain that some people imagine.

The signature Flat Iron Steak costs around £15, which is undeniably good value in a city where a decent steak at a restaurant or pub can easily cost £30–40 or more. However, the steak itself is relatively small. I find it perfectly adequate, but if my children can finish one without much trouble, most adults will probably find it a little small and want a couple of side dishes as well. By the time you add sides and drinks, the bill is no longer exceptionally cheap, but it is still a very reasonable price for a steak dinner in London.

A London Success Story

Flat Iron started in London and has grown into a popular steakhouse chain with locations across the city.

The menu is intentionally simple. Most people order the restaurant’s signature Flat Iron Steak, and that simplicity is part of the appeal.

Rather than offering dozens of different cuts and complicated choices, Flat Iron focuses on doing one thing well.

What Does the Steak Taste Like?

If you are expecting something comparable to a steak from a famous American steakhouse such as Peter Luger Steak House or Wolfgang’s Steakhouse, you may be disappointed.

The steak here is not a thick, heavily marbled, steakhouse-style experience. It is closer to a thinner, more delicate cut that prioritizes tenderness over dramatic presentation.

Personally, I would not describe it as the best steak I have ever eaten. It is not the kind of meal that leaves me talking about it for days afterward.

What it does have, however, is a pleasant beefy flavour and remarkable tenderness.

My children are not particularly enthusiastic about steak in general, yet they happily eat it here every time. In fact, they often enjoy it more than the higher-quality steaks I cook at home.

I am still not entirely sure how Flat Iron manages to make its steaks so consistently tender, but I would love to learn the technique.

Why We Keep Going Back

One thing I occasionally miss from Korea is the sheer variety of grilled meat dishes available when eating out.

Growing up, I was spoiled for choice, from Korean barbecue and marinated ribs to countless other meat-based dishes. That probably explains why I can be a little hard to impress when it comes to steak restaurants.

Flat Iron does not completely solve that problem, but it succeeds at something else.

Sometimes I simply think, “The children should eat some proper meat today.”

For those occasions, Flat Iron works perfectly.

The quality-to-price ratio is good, the atmosphere is relaxed, and the children genuinely enjoy the food.

Free Popcorn and Free Ice Cream

Another reason for Flat Iron’s popularity is that the experience includes a few small touches that customers love.

Before your meal arrives, unlimited popcorn is brought to the table.

After you pay, you receive a small metal token shaped like one of the restaurant’s signature cleavers.

You can keep it as a souvenir, or exchange it at the ice cream cart near the entrance for a complimentary soft-serve ice cream.

The ice cream is surprisingly good, and it feels like the perfect ending to the meal.

My children look forward to it every time we visit, and I have to admit that I enjoy it too.

There is something satisfying about leaving the restaurant with an ice cream in hand and taking a walk through London afterwards.

Worth Visiting?

Flat Iron is very popular, and queues can be long during peak meal times, so making a reservation is usually a good idea.

Fortunately, there are locations throughout London, making it easy to find one near wherever you happen to be sightseeing.

If you reach a point during your London trip when you think:

“I’d really like some proper steak today instead of another burger or portion of fish and chips.”

Flat Iron is a solid choice.

It is much more affordable than a traditional steakhouse, consistently good, family-friendly, and comes with free ice cream at the end.

That combination alone explains why we find ourselves returning quite often.

It may not be London’s greatest steak, but if you are looking for a reliable, reasonably priced steak dinner that both adults and children will enjoy, Flat Iron is well worth a visit.
